Alex,

You are correct – it will depend on the construction of the home and where the treadmill is placed. If you can position it over a weight-bearing wall that helps, but often that’s not possible. We recommend using treadmills and other equipment that weighs over 300lbs on a first floor only. For some people this isn’t an option, but you’ll have to evaluate what amount of force your floors can handle.

Is it really enough to simply judge the weight of the machine and the weight of the person? How does the force the person running generates enter into the equation? I’m no physicist but I would guess it amplifies the weight. I have a new construction home and if my wife even does jumping jacks on the second floor the first floor recessed lighting trim pieces that are supported by tension will loosen up.

Louis,

Damage to a first floor ceiling is dependent on the size/kind of treadmill and the age/strength of your home. If you have an older home where cracks appear in the ceiling due to impact, we would not recommend placing a treadmill upstairs. We also recommend checking the weight of the treadmill prior to purchase if you are concerned about using it on a second story. Some treadmills weigh considerably more than others.
